Gray hair

April 16,

Often „gray” is associated with „old”. But this doesn’t have to be so when it comes to hair. Nonetheless, most women don’t like their first few gray hairs and they would gladly get rid of them. There are lots of different ways of getting rid of gray hair.

Single silver strands – having a few single gray highlights is not a reason for radical change of color. Some subtle colorization would be a good solution. It will give the haircut a new hue and it will sufficiently cover the gray strands. Blondes are in a better situation: it is enough to dye a few new strands and this little bit of gray hair will no longer stand out, making an impression of beautiful reflexes instead.

Gray highlights – here the highlight technique comes useful. In between the gray areas some highlights are added, similar in color to the natural hair tint. This way the share of gray in the whole of the hair-do is reduced and the effect seems very natural. The advantage of this trick is a lack of apparent roots, which appear in case the classic, full dyeing. Such masking highlights should be renewed every 2-3 months. When the volume of gray hair is increasing, keeping the natural color can be supported by highlights in varied shades. It works out well with blond hair as gray color is not so noticeable among the fair strands. Ashen shades of blond will fit here best.

Entirely gray hair – when gray hair accounts for 20-30% of all hair, intensive full colorization is needed indisputably.  Radical dyeing depends of course on the hair’s structure. If the hair is strong, we can dye it safely with any dyes available in every beauty shop. We chose only these with the information on the box saying to cover gray hair. There are more delicate dyes – without ammonia. These also cover gray strands.

Natural colorization, that is henna, may be chosen as well. The principle is similar to that of dyeing, but here the change in color is caused not by hydrogen peroxide but oxygen in the air. After henna has been applied hair is provided with colorant precursors. During the next few days hair is getting darker under the influence of oxygen.  This is why after henna application we do not wash hair for at least 2-3 days. Hair will look natural and healthy.

How about natural gray? – well-kept silvery hair-do looks very natural. For gray hair care there are special shampoos and conditioners available, which prevent the characteristic yellowed shade caused by cigarette smoke, sunlight or other environmental factors. Violet shampoos should be used with every second washing, in order to prevent bluish tint. Hair can be also dyed with the choice of gray colors: dove-gray, Scandinavian blonde.

A gray hair is actually not gray but transparent. It has no pigment, so contrasting with hair color it seems gray. Its structure is also different – it is harder and less prone to styling. It reacts differently to coloring and perm. Whether our hair turns gray depends on genes. Some women go gray slowly in their 30’s, others only after they are 60 years old. Sometimes gray hair appear with 20-year-olds. Early gray hair may be caused by malnutrition: copper deficiency speeds the process up.
